This is the second book in the "Fortune" series and set in 1880. Ty Fortune begins his career as a professional poker player in Des Moines, Iowa. While in Des Moines, Ty and fellow poker player Elizabeth "Liz" Chandler become friends. They find that the days pass much better if you have a friend to spend time with.

Together they travel to Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska and Cheyenne in Montana Territory. Liz introduces Ty to two churches, a concert and a play.

Ty exposes some card cheats, breaks up two train robberies and is wounded in one of the train robberies and saved by an Indian woman.
